I grew up in small-town West Virginia with adoring parents and one cool cat, or my big brother. As a teen, I ran many miles for fitness and daydreamed a million miles for fun.
Hot for exploration after one year at college, I headed to Miami Beach and became an assistant at the late 90s “it” agency for male models. Admired many six packs. Shipped many model books via mail, or carrier pigeon; it was the olden days. Packed up my rollerblades and headed to NYC. Ate all the carbs at the deli near the L train, because youthful collagen knows no bounds. Had an unrequited love affair with the city. Goodbye, love.
Back at WVU, I earned an English degree, cum laude, while mastering customer service as the saltiest barista in town. Landed my first freelance gigs as a writer and editor. Took flight again, landing at a B2B agency in Memphis. Enjoyment level: gyno appointment. My itch for freedom was raging (or was it scabes from all those Goodwill hauls). Hello again, freelancing. Side-gigged in tv/film production, including a Rod Lurie political drama, a Luke Perry horse flick, and Bernie Mac’s last film. Learned NSFW slang on a Three 6 Mafia video shoot. Found true love with three pit bulls, Kaiser, Phaedra, and Pvt. Joker.
Country roads took me home. I had two beautiful baby boys. Didn’t sleep for 1,460 nights. Cooked all the healthy meals to my children's dismay. Ditched my running habit and got a new fitness groove. Joined the board of an animal rescue. Wore all the statement tees. Opined louder. Prayed harder. Built a big, strong portfolio with clients across the country. Lived longingly ever after.
